Back when the bombs hung So closely over our heads You were a wonder In my summer with ghosts When you were tangled Under creepy downs You were a wonder In my summer with ghosts Under the metro In guarded fields of glass I was a traitor But only for a moment fast You were a wonder In my summer with ghosts You were a wonder In my summer with ghosts In palaces of gold In foreign lands Where the cyclops sleeps out on The desert sands In palaces of gold In foreign lands Now that you have gone I understand

I know you told me That animals are painless But my heart is breaking Deep in this jungle Federation sanctioned Now I've lost contact So I've kept this diary In hopes you find me I know the queen will say that I was brave But now this captain's living as a slave In the crimson morning I am awoken And made to torture I'm nearly broken I can see the blue fields And the skylines of my home Where the raging bloodbeasts With horns forever roam I know the queen will say that I was brave But now this captain's living as a slave The pageants and parades will have to wait The green and ghoul gorilla seals my fate

Now all you magicians can't touch me From dusting spells in smoke and in shade Man I think you seen better days Now all you magicians can't touch me From dusting spells in smoke and in shade Man I think you seen better days Let science never turn us away Let science never turn us away Let science never turn us away Where the greys they watch in the tropics Let science never turn us away Let science never turn us away But I've made contact beyond the mirror room Would Edgar Cayce turn us away Should Edgar Cayce turn us away Could Edgar Cayce turn us away Imagine greys will turn us away Imagine greys will turn us away Imagine greys will turn us away But I've made contact beyond the mirror room

And in the autumn season Baby Jamie conjures demons And in the autumn season Baby Jamie conjures demons But it something that you won't believe in It's something that you won't believe in But you know it's all the way Baby Jamie conjures demons And when our planets are circling our journey to Neptune I built my own spaceship and it's called the Neptune too And it's something that you won't believe in It's something that you won't believe in But you know it's all the way Baby Jamie conjures demons

In the year So long sailor In the year In the year So long sailor In the year In the year of milky skies The breather's dry their eyes On Aurora's sleeve Warriors thrill me later on In hidden thunderdomes To steadfast days But we could see the sun That's dropping in the sea evermore And we could see the snow But we're staying much to close to the shore But their minds Have treated you so unkind In the year So long sailor In the year In the year So long sailor In the year A warning The scheming breather bulls They want to fly the wolves This New Year's Eve My whole life Is waiting to begin To ride on Neptune's fin All these days But we could see the sun That's dropping in the sea evermore And we could see the snow But we're staying much to close to the shore But their minds Have treated you so unkind In the year So long sailor In the year In the year Sail on sailor In the year

From the land beyond beyond From the world past hope and fear I bid you genie now appear On seven ships we sail To make it to the end of the world just as well But we don't see that anyway But I want more Of these gifts that you've given to me And I want more Of these gifts that you given to me And I want more Of this world that you've given to me Cause everything is happening you'll see

Ocean Stars 03:20
I don't feel at all nostalgic For a place that I call home Never had but that's not tragic Much more content to roam The ocean, stars, the sun and seasons Very rarely often change The uniform of the familiar Is never really rearranged Cause everything that I have despised Is keeping me in this disguise that binds me All the nine to five and the Friday lives Are leading me like lemmings to the sea Even though I try to find it I'll never wait around Cause back in West Chicago The travelers and ramblers Want me to settle down But I don't feel at all nostalgic For a place that I call home Never had but that's not tragic Much more content to roam And the life that you once knew Is slowly taking a holiday And the times that you said were few Are only waiting for you I don't feel at all nostalgic For a place that I call home Never had but that's not tragic Much more content to roam Cause me and you and you and I We weathered this beautiful storm together But I'll never wait around

So tonight the moon is turning red A locust spread and demons stalk this land And even though the fire's in my sight November waning all across the town But that's okay my sweetheart Cause I love you I wanted to be the one in the end And though my blood is spilling around you I could be your friend Til the end of the world Now I see the lamb's blood on your door But we both know that it can't save us now The son of morning star is on the rise And now I see the longing in your eyes But that's okay my sweetheart Cause I love you I wanted to be the one in the end And though my blood is spilling around you I could be your friend So don't even cry The rats are coming the werewolves are here Don't even cry I wanted love I wanted something

You know I'm only going away But I won't be gone forever You know I'm only going away Maybe today My submarine that's forged out of chrome The ocean is my new home My memory is turning to foam In the deep green Cause Poseidon's fury never gave me A chance to say goodbye But it's just as well Cause it only make you cry I'm skipping this world Just this water cosmos Like a reflecting slate On this tidal wave You know I just can't wait Going all around the world You know I'm only going away But I won't be gone forever You know I'm only going away Maybe Saturday My eagle always travels in mist But that can't replace your soft kiss My eagle always travels in mist But forever Cause these summer storms and whirlpools bring me Up the banks of the Nile But those pharaohs probably hate me after while I'm packing my bags for another journey You're always asking why? When you say hello I always say goodbye Going all around the world We all live in this chrome submarine

Cause all warriors find it's completely sublime It's the technique end table And furniture mavens always find secret havens When the tigers unable But they claim reprieve With gladiators up their sleeve With gladiators up their sleeve Cause all warriors find it's completely sublime In the dining room legions Where the Eskimo wizards conjure up wonder blizzards And turn pandas to demons While their magnets pull The horns of Alexander's bull The horns of Alexander's bull From the land of secret lockets And prophets with rockets You find them But you don't want to know No you don't want to know That all warriors find Your intrusions unkind Still you find them But they don't want to know No they don't want to know Cause all warriors find It's completely sublime Slaying folio rangers Where Formby attacks And the finish is cracked While evading the dangers And their mangers blaze The brilliance of the Magi's ways The brilliance of the Magi's ways From the land of secret lockets And prophets with rockets You find them But you don't want to know No you don't want to know That all warriors find Your intrusions sublime In ancient design But you don't want to know No you don't want to know Calling all warriors!

Goodnight Winkin, Blinkin and Nod will find you Sleep in the arms of empires falling The old, sweet Catahoula calling In perfect rows of fertile crops Forever more Goodnight you're a loving son Your life has just begun So share your Grace with all the monsters That you find when you were only swimming Into all our new beginnings In the clouds So goodnight The spacecraft here will soon be landing For all good works that you've done That linger all around the heaven Cause now heaven is the place you call your home But we Don't ever want to live our life in shade

about

This was recorded about 4 months before the release of Song Cyclops Volume One. The official release date was November of 2000 but we received the albums a few months before that and was available in local stores during the summer of 2000.

Although Song Cyclops Volume One was recorded on my own with some additional recording by Dave, this line up played a lot and sang the backing vocals which were plentiful for Doleful Lions at that time (major Beach Boys influence that both Dave and myself were obsessed with. In the summer of 1999 Dave made me a copy of the Beach Boys Smile bootlegs and that was huge to me, still is to be honest).

Aynsley, Amy and I used to rehearse in the University of North Carolina quad, just me with an acoustic guitar and 3 part harmonies. We played there so much we were asked to open for Doug Clark and The Hot Nuts at a concert in the quad but were subsequently kicked off the bill when Mr. Clark, a North Carolina beach music legend saw a flyer I made about how we were going to attempt to disrupt the ionosphere during our performance. I don't know why he took that seriously? This line up played live more than any other incarnation of the Doleful Lions and played a show with our new bass player Kurt Mueller (who produced The Rats Are Coming! The Werewolves Are Here!) in Arlington Virginia at Now! Music and Fashion an amazing record store RIP.

This was one of the best times of my entire life and listening to this now has been very nice.

I hope you enjoy this as much as we enjoyed making it.

about

Doleful Lions Chicago, Illinois

Doleful Lions are one the great lost bands of modern times, its not an under achiever thing rather more that they’ve been constantly overlooked in favour of ensembles, fads and fashions less musically astute and considerably less talented, always occupying their own little orbit shying away from the various bandwagons that have come passing them by - Mark Barton (The Sunday Experience) ... more
