i don't use drugs that kind of life's too hard for me yet i've seen trails of once that was and what it could be strange eventide down at surfside and sleepaway the death by the shore in the darkest night in the sand and light with the sun as your eyes and it makes me want to try and say that we could fall in love and we could fall in love with wasted ways and summer days and frightwigs have eclipsed the moon on stout and lime in evening time and "i've been in this town so long that back in the city..." and don't you know it was the government stopped the beach boys from releasing smile yet it's still done harm look at the way we've kept the farm with it's endless revisions and it makes me want to smash the masses and we could fall in love and we could fall in love

1723 02:50
the ancients they sing the ballad of hiram injected with a shadow serum illuminating all that came before revealed the mystery of nature and sciences eastern stars and graveyard alliances once to walk the sacred ground of kings but they wade through the fire back into the ash and pire all the while they twist the prophets' words they've been around the world and they've seen kingdoms sublime architects designs of cydonia demons of the district columbia hidden in this capitol of shame the leopard's spots they mask all the sorrow of freemason plots and endless tomorrows the truest light of love is not therein though they met on the level though they part of the square and feast on st. john's day in 1723

i wanted to fly like a sweet afternoon bird that's soaring out in the blue i needed to break the bonds of the world on wings of my leaving this feeling is the sound of a billion stars in the firmament blown and drown in the finest crowns cause i want to be high i used to be roaring this warning's grounded me i needed to shake the shroud of this sleeping on wings of my leaving this feeling is the sight of a temple gold made of ancient stones and glooms of an orchid's bloom

Dear Lazarus 03:08
dear lazarus were you grateful when he rolled the stone away or had the stench of days swallowed your chance to live again? dear lazarus was your sadness secrets rotting on the vine or had the merchant of time swallowed your chance to live again? oh dear lazarus in your slumber you walked with seraphim and kissed the sacred keepers you swam in holy oceans the scythe of demon reapers now swings above your crown the bondage wires wound as the shroud is loosened the blinding light of day is harshest on your head and now my heart is heavy as i think of you oh dear lazarus

Tanah Lot 04:53
once upon the hindi mystics drank the sun built a shrine of ocean nirantha flew over empires framed in blue where spires spin in motion all the priests sarongs have changed to snakes to shield the shrine (even as angels are sleeping) heavenly mangers taught to fly are bathed in brine (even as angels are sleeping) i pray that you too will find the truth has been revealed the angels' fiery trumpets play for all the children and they're saying once in june a gentle stranger from the moon found a secret chamber in the caves of holy snakes and shadowplays found a secret chamber across the sacred streams gunung kawi my ghost will fly (even as dragons are sleeping) and over ulu watu off the cape i'll streak the sky (even as dragons are sleeping) i pray that you too will find the truth has been revealed the angels' fiery trumpets play for all the children and they're singing

when we were wolves in magic and numbers someone must have prayed for my soul in the stranglehold of bloodthirst and light we will take the night we will take the night when we were panthers in wax machine vendors someone must have prayed for my soul in the shade and hideaways we wait who will take the bait who will take the bait andromeda will carry a lantern across the sea so raise the sail ascend the secret stair that's been revealed to me if you believe it's all just waiting for... when we were wolves with magic and numbers someone must have prayed for my soul in the stranglehold of bloodthirst and light we will take the night we will take the night

i'm here to tell you goodbye my hearts gone out wandering where the sand meets the sky and if you forget me just know it's all the same at night the sound of oil wells echo my shame i had a dream and i made it my wife i know that one day i'll be a falcon and fly over yellow rose pastures and all i'll change my name to something that you'll never know the desert will sleep and dream of you when the wind starts to blow the canyons that spoke of rattlesnakes spinning away in the sun texas is beautiful now that i have gone i've waited so long for love that so easily slipped through my hands texas is beautiful and so are my plans in the land with blood on it's hands in the land with blood on it's hands you won't make me stay i swear i'll be gone in the dawn of the day texas is beautiful so i'll find my way i've waited so long for love that so easily slipped through my hands texas is beautiful and so are my plans in the land with blood on it's hands in the land with blood on it's hands in the land with blood on it's hands in the land with blood on it's hands

wave to graveyards of swallows i wanted to follow so i'll start tomorrow i'll say so long to the non believers i hope you find some meaning cause the sands you grab are fleeting but you can't seen (you come out at night) the judgements you've made aren't sustaining you can't see (nightwings fail in flight) that it's time to let it go you won't take heed (you come out at night) of everything that's died in your hands in this catacomb you've made you've never tried to save what's real one day i'll climb the holy mountain and bathe in healing fountain and throw away my doubting i know i'll leave this world of violence and celebrate the silence in castles of ancient kindness cause now i see (i come out at night) the judgements i've made aren't sustaining now i see (nightwings fail in flight) that it's time to let it go i will take heed (i come out at night) of everything that's died in my hands cause in this catacomb so low i've kept my eye on the swallow catch my halo while it's falling catch my halo catch my halo king of swallows catch my halo

about

Expanded edition of the 2002 album originally released on Parasol Records and Plastic Bird UK.

"The Doleful Lions have been quietly hammering away in obscurity, mining all those paisley goldmines of pop perfection-from Phil Spector's classic girl pop records to Alex Chilton and Chris Bell-to create the sort of psych pop epiphanies that people like me live for. Theirs is a vintage sound written and performed with an obvious love for classic harmonic transcendence and old-school production values. Out Like a Lamb (Parasol) marks their fourth album to date, and by all counts it's the masterstroke they've been hinting at for years. Twelve lush floating pop songs comprised of acoustic/electric guitars, synth, drums, strings and effects that capture and reflect moments and scenes in time more vividly than my frazzled mind ever could. Where their last record was a sometimes-ramshackle journey through twisted mythical landscapes and failed relationships, Lamb feels almost holy and sacred. These are immaculately produced songs for people that haven't closed their eyes to all the beauty in the world just yet, written by a fellow that knows how to tell a good story and croon a sweet lullaby. Everything here, the harmonies, the arrangements, the vocals (male and female) are perfectly rendered from start to finish. I don't think I'll hear anything as heavenly as "1723" (with a perfect vocal from Aynsley Pirtle) for a very long time, though the heartachingly beautiful "Surfside Motel" comes close. Really, there's no point in singling out any actual tracks; it's a tear-streaked monster from start to finish. Fans of Chris Bell, Phil Spector, Syd Floyd, Who, Love, the Beach Boys, the Millennium, the Clean, Elephant 6 and all the beautiful things in life need this now."-Lee Jackson/The Broken Face

You might infer an awful lot about an album that features the lyric: "Don't you know it was the government/ Stopped the Beach Boys from releasing Smile" - and you would be right. Doleful Lions are unabashedly in love with the closing years of the 1960s. Out Like a Lamb, their fourth album, is a delicate, psychedelic masterpiece, encompassing moments of marvellously baroque whimsy ("Riders of the analogue phoenix/ And you won't stand with me in the colosseum") and beauty ("Wave to graveyards of swallows"). Fragile and heroically nostalgic, Out Like a Lamb feels like the work of friendly ghosts. - David Peschek The Guardian (4 out of 5 stars)

There are moments during Out Like a Lamb that make you wish that R.E.M. followed up Automatic For the People with an album like this one, but R.E.M. are long dead, and it’s time for someone else to pick up the slack. Out Like a Lamb isn’t perfect, but at least they tried to be perfect. Go listen to “Surfside Motel” dozen times and let yourself fall in love with the Doleful Lions." / Adrien Bergand ( POP MATTERS )

Doleful Lions
Out Like A Lamb
By Michael Edwards

Doleful Lions songwriter Jonathan Scott has a ridiculous number of good ideas in his head. Sometimes he can't quite turn those ideas into satisfyingly complete songs (as was the case on 2000's Song Cyclops, Volume One), but when those ideas come together, it is a thing of rare beauty, and that is the case with Out Like A Lamb. With an obvious love of the Beach Boys (with one song even borrowing a line from "Heroes And Villains") and sharing a similar philosophy to adventurous contemporaries like Mercury Rev, Doleful Lions have an ambitious manifesto where they mix articulate lyrics and gorgeous melodies into something very special. Acoustic guitars dominate many of the songs on Out Like A Lamb, with the strumming intertwined with layer after layer of delicate vocals and other instruments. To untrained ears, it might sound like just another indie-pop band, but there's something remarkable going on here. Out Like A Lamb is one of the most understated albums I've heard, at least since the last Doleful Lions record. It doesn't use any kind of sneaky tricks to get your attention, relying instead on both craftsmanship and subtlety, which are revealed after repeated listening. It just keeps getting better and better, and with enough time and patience, it might end up being one of those albums that becomes an essential part of your everyday listening. (Parasol)

about

Doleful Lions Chicago, Illinois

Doleful Lions are one the great lost bands of modern times, its not an under achiever thing rather more that they’ve been constantly overlooked in favour of ensembles, fads and fashions less musically astute and considerably less talented, always occupying their own little orbit shying away from the various bandwagons that have come passing them by - Mark Barton (The Sunday Experience) ... more
